  • 1 large green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 8 oz canned tomato sauce, no-salt-added
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 whole wheat buns

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground turkey.
  • Cook the turkey for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles with a spatula, until no longer pink.
  • Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and sauté for 5 minutes until vegetables are tender.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 60 seconds until aromatic.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, maple syrup, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour the sauce over the meat mixture and stir to incorporate fully.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat.
  • Serve the mixture warm on toasted whole wheat buns.
